Car or Pool Antifreeze for Pool Skimmers: Summer is coming to a close for yet another year and you face the unfortunate task of closing up the pool. After a great season of splashing and swimming, you may be reluctant to tackle this chore but it is absolutely necessary. You can call in a professional or you can handle it on your own. Here are some tips on how to close your inground pool in just a day.
First off, should you use antifreeze as part of the pool closing process? The answer is -- it’s not necessary if you properly blew out the lines. That task gets water out of the pipes so they don’t freeze during winter. But if you properly winterized your pool, there should be no need to add antifreeze.

Closing Tips
What will you need?

  1. Remove deck and skimmer equipment: Take off any accessories such as ladders, railings, safety ropes, diving board, etc. Take out the eyeball fittings from the return lines as well as the skimmer baskets from your skimmers.
  2. Test the water: By testing your water, you can ensure proper balancing. Take a sample and take it to your pool store or have your pool cleaning expert take it. Or, try using test strips to ensure a pH between 7.4 and 7.6 and alkalinity between 100ppm and 150ppm. Chlorine levels should be between one and three parts per million. Don’t use chlorine? Your sanitizer should be at the proper level. When your water is balanced, you will avoid corrosion and the build-up of scale.
  3. Clean the pool: Prior to adding the winter chemicals, the pool should be cleaned. Brush down the walls and steps, and then skim the surface of the water to remove debris.
  4. Add chemicals: It’s time to add winterizing chemicals such as alkalinity/pH increaser, chlorine tablets, shock and algaecide.
  5. Shock the pool: Do this on the night you close up your pool for the winter.
  6. Backwash and clean filter and pump: Backwash the filter, then open the pump’s lid and get out any debris from the basket. Switch the filter back to the “Filter” setting on your multi-port valve.
  7. Cleanout the lines. Research this task thoroughly, as one misstep can cause the pipes to crack underground. A professional is a good idea for this step. No need for antifreeze, as we said above.
  8. If you ever do use antifreeze, never use car antifreeze! Get special swimming pool antifreeze. First, remove the skimmer basket and plug, drain water to below the skimmer, then add the antifreeze into the hole in the skimmer. Again, we recommend against this. Instead, cleanout the lines properly and you won’t need this step.
  9. Put the cover on: Apply your safety cover. Make sure there are no rips and tears before applying. Secure them with water tubes.
