A Hygrometer Will Have Your Back When It Comes To Indoor Air Quality!

When people think of air quality, they usually think of air that’s free of pollutants and safe to breathe. The two other elements of good quality air are temperature and humidity, and they go hand-in-hand.

To make the air in a home feel comfortable and safe, careful adjustment is needed. In modern homes, the central HVAC is tasked with this job. The HVAC will circulate air, pulling out contaminants, while adjusting the temperature and humidity so that the air is perfect for a home’s occupants. When air quality professionals design an HVAC system, they use special instruments to determine the humidity that is present in the air so they can allow for it to be adjusted accordingly.

What is a Hygrometer?

Hygrometers have been used for centuries to understand the nature of water in the air. They were initially used to help understand meteorology and atmospheric conditions.

In modern usage, hygrometers tell HVAC professionals the humidity level in the air. With the invention of modern HVAC systems, it became necessary to adjust moisture levels in a building to make them feel comfortable and keep them from problems like mold growth. Hygrometers are coming into widespread usage to help homeowners better understand the relationship between humidity and indoor air comfort.

How Does it Work?

Hygrometers are becoming more and more common in homes and are becoming standard in most digital thermostats. When HVAC contractors design a system, they consider the amount of humidity that the system will regulate. For example, an oversized system may cool a home quicker, but it won’t run long enough to remove humidity. The result will be stuffy, clammy-feeling air that doesn’t feel as cool as dry air. With an undersized system, the air will dry out too much and could worsen allergies or sinus problems by drying out mucous membranes.

Hygrometers are what tell HVAC professionals and homeowners that humidity is being adjusted to appropriate levels. In thermostats, they can be used to automatically adjust humidity levels or turn on dehumidifiers to deal with excess humidity.

Are There Different Types of Hygrometers?

Humans have been testing the humidity of the air around them using various methods for thousands of years. Of all the methods that have been used to test for air moisture, they can be boiled down to two simple categories based on their historical usage:

  • Analog Hygrometers: The first hygrometers were very rudimentary and had varying accuracy levels. They used elements like weighing the difference between dry coal and wet coal to determine humidity or even the changing length of human hair to determine moisture levels.
  • Digital Hygrometers:  Modern hygrometers use digital means to accomplish the same things with higher accuracy levels. They use the electrical resistance or capacitance of moisture-laden air to determine the humidity and express it as a percentage. They are being built into the most recent thermostats and are more frequently seen around homes for people who like to fine-tune their air quality.
