Improving the HVAC System in the New Year

The home’s HVAC system controls the air purity and temperature of the house. There’s nothing more critical to keeping the air in a home fresh and warm in the winter than a properly functioning HVAC system. Homeowners can make a few resolutions this year to make their home happier and healthier with the help of a well-cared-for HVAC system.

Resolution One: Schedule Maintenance Two Times a Year

The home’s HVAC system is used every day of the year. In the summer, the A/C is often cranked up high, and in the winter, warm air is blowing through the vents from the furnace. Without the HVAC system, the home would be unreliable for comfort.

Considering the system runs every day a year, it should come as no surprise that it needs regular maintenance. Unfortunately, most annual HVAC maintenance can get easily swept under the rug. The ductwork, furnace, and air conditioner all need yearly maintenance to ensure their proper functioning. A reliable HVAC company can handle all the necessary maintenance the units need and find any issues or repairs that need to be resolved before they become a big problem.

Resolution Two: Replace the Air Filter Regularly

Most homes breathe air that isn’t as clean as it could be. Why? The air filters of the air conditioner and furnace need to be replaced. While some homes can get away with only replacing the filters of their air conditioner and furnace once a year, most families will need to do it more often. Thinner filters need to be replaced every three months, and homes with children and pets should expect to replace even thicker filters every six months or so.

When HVAC filters are dirty, the air of the house will be full of dust and impurities. Clogged filters may also restrict the airflow in the ducts, limiting the hot or cold air circulating through the home and negatively impacting the temperature regulation in the home. If a homeowner is uncertain of replacing the filter or what type of filter is needed, they can reach out to a qualified HVAC technician for assistance.

Resolution Three: Regulate the Temperature in the House

No one likes to see a high electric bill. While a higher bill is expected when the A/C or heater is running all the time during extreme outdoor temperatures, there are ways to resolve to keep that bill down and still have a comfortable home environment.

Keeping the home’s temperature consistent throughout the day is one way to lower the electric bill. Keep the temperature slightly higher, in the range of 68-75 degrees during the day, and drop it when the house is empty to 65 degrees. It’s a common misconception that it takes more energy to warm the house to a higher degree frequently, but choosing to regulate the temperature based on occupancy does not tax the HVAC system any more than keeping the temperature the same 24/7.

Homes with programmable thermostats can program their units to run at a consistent schedule that affords comfort and affordability, or homeowners can just be good about changing their non-programmable thermostat on a schedule.

Resolving to take better care of a home’s HVAC system assures that all its inhabitants will begin the New Year with a higher comfort level!
