Some of the Most Frightening Plumbing Emergencies a Homeowner Can Face

Everyone loves to jump and scream at a scary movie. It’s fun to cuddle under a warm blanket and be scared for a little whole. However, scares should never come from a home’s plumbing system. There are plenty of potential home plumbing disasters that can make homeowners scream. Here are a few tips from local plumbers on how to handle them appropriately.

Burst Pipes Are a Water Damage Nightmare

A burst pipe is definitely one of the home plumbing disasters that can make any homeowner want to scream or pull their hair out.

While they can happen for any reason, they all result in the same problem… potentially massive home damage and a disturbance in the flow of water not only to the home but also to the entire neighbourhood. Pipes can burst in the lawn underground, in the walls, in the basement, or anywhere in the home, spilling massive amounts of water. This results in immediate damage to the home, but also the potential for long term consequences like mould and mildew problems if the water isn’t properly cleaned up.

If a burst pipe happens, contact a plumber immediately. They can not only stop the flow of water but help to clean up the mess in a way that keeps everyone in the home safe and sound.

Sink or Toilet Overflow

There is nothing scarier than flushing the toilet or trying to run water down the sink and watching it just keep coming back up. As the water level rises, so can a homeowner’s panic level.

The first thing that should be done is to locate and turn off the water to the overflowing plumbing appliance. Once the water is shut off, the source of the overflow can be better evaluated. Hopefully, it is related to a clog that can be easily fixed, but emergency plumbing services should always be utilized to make sure it doesn’t turn into a larger, expensive problem that results in more home damage.

To help stop potential overflow before it starts, make sure that everyone in the household knows what can go down the toilet or sink and what should be thrown in the garbage. Baby wipes, hygiene products, cotton balls, and cotton swabs should always be thrown away, never flushed.

A Sump Pump Failure

Especially during times of heavy rainfall, a working sump pump is worth its weight in gold. The flip side is that a sump pump failure can be incredibly frustrating, leading to a very large amount of water flowing into the basement very quickly, leading to flooding.

Sump pumps will eventually wear out and need to be replaced, especially in areas that get a lot of water all at once. They should be included in any regular plumbing maintenance performed in the home.

Flooding is a major problem for a lot of different reasons. Not only is it difficult to get under control, but it also can lead to serious problems with mould and mildew after that fact. And that doesn’t even include the potential damage done to family heirlooms and other personal property that may be stored in the basement. If the water in the sump pump doesn’t seem to be going down, don’t hesitate.- just call a plumber right away.
