CAD/CAM dentistry – computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing – is used to improve the design and creation of dental restorations such as dental prostheses, including crowns, crown lays, veneers, inlays and onlays, fixed dental prostheses, bridges, dental implant supported restorations, removable or fixed dentures, and orthodontic appliances. Dr. Carroll is a certified provider for the CEREC system of dentistry. CEREC, an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, is a process where teeth are x-rayed, photographed, and captured by a machine. This machine then processes the information to display a full 3D model of the patient's mouth. CAD software then refines that model to highlight the areas that need restoration. Once completed, the CEREC milling unit will sculpt the designed restoration out of a ceramic block. The ceramic is chosen to provide an almost exact match to natural tooth color. The CEREC machine will then craft the restoration appliance itself within the space of ten to twenty minutes. When placed perfectly, the crown will have no chance of accidental removal.
