Dental Implant Restorations
Dentists use dental implants to replace missing teeth. Most patients with a healthy jawbone structure are candidates for dental implants. The integrity and health of the jawbone are vital because the base of the dental implant goes directly into the bone.
Once the dentist has implanted the titanium “root” for the replacement tooth or teeth, and the bone begins to grow around the implant, Dr. Arive will craft a custom treatment crown to replace the missing tooth.
Types of Dental Implants
The doctor's type of implant depends on how many teeth the patient has missing. Single dental implants are helpful for up to a few missing teeth, but the weight of too many titanium roots can become too heavy for the jaw, causing pain and discomfort.
For multiple-tooth restoration, Dr. Arive evaluates the patient’s teeth and formulates a treatment plan that may include:
- A bridge mounted to dental implants instead of adjoining teeth
- Full or partial fixed dentures, with four to six dental implants for attachment
Fixed dentures anchored to dental implants offer particular advantages. Regular dentures may shift and cause irritation and uneven wear, affecting your ability to chew, talk, and general oral health.
Dentures with underlying implants allow the dentures to lock into place, keeping them fixed and secure during the day. The artificial teeth are removable at night, making it easier for patients to keep them clean and maintain good oral hygiene.
Another advantage of dentures with underlying implants is that the presence of the implants helps prevent the jawbone from receding over time, a common occurrence once the natural teeth are no longer there. The implants hold the bone in place, reducing the chance of deterioration and eliminating “loose dentures.”
